Turek

Ján Turek (*June 19, 1923, Torysky, Slovakia – †November 4, 2019, Levoča, Slovakia) enlisted in 1944 in Podolínec. During the Slovak National Uprising, German soldiers surrounded the barracks where he was stationed. They disarmed the Slovak soldiers and took them to an international labor camp in Hannover, Germany. Later, they transferred him to Munster Lager and then to Bratislava. In January 1945, he managed to escape. After returning to Slovakia, he studied at the Forestry School in Sigord. He worked as a forester in the Municipal Forests of Levoča and later in the Military Forests of Kežmarok. He was a meticulous beekeeper and dedicated much of his life to nature. But to me, he was not just a skilled expert—he was my grandfather.
