Relief is an exceptional form of sculptural art that can be compared to painting with light and shadow. This specific approach allows the artist to work with depth in a flat surface and create optical illusions through the delicate interplay of shadows, much like with colors. Thus, the relief can evoke three-dimensionality even where its depth is only symbolic.
This relief is dedicated to a significant figure – Štefan Fogaš (1924 – 1974), who was the first Slovak diplomat serving the Holy See. Due to the political situation and the communist regime in Slovakia, Fogaš was unable to visit his homeland for many years, and only after 1968 could he return. In 1968/69, at his initiative, the construction of a church in his native village of Šarišská Trstená began, where this relief is placed. I am grateful that through this work, I had the opportunity to learn about this exceptional personality in our history.
