The relief represents a unique form of sculptural art, reminiscent of painting with light and shadow. This specific approach allows artists to work with spatial depth on a flat surface, creating optical illusions through a delicate play of halftones, much like painting with colors. As a result, reliefs can evoke a sense of three-dimensionality even in places where their depth remains purely symbolic. I created this relief in honor of Štefan Fogaš (1924 – 1974), the first Slovak diplomat to serve the Holy See. The communist regime prevented him from returning to his homeland for many years, but after 1968, he was finally able to come back. In 1968 – 1969, he initiated the construction of a church in his hometown, Šarišská Trstená, where I placed this relief. Through this work, I had the opportunity to learn about an extraordinary figure in our history.
