This portrait captures Štefan Barnáš (1900 – 1964), a Slovak auxiliary bishop, professor of theology and philosophy. He was also a political prisoner and a symbol of courage and unwavering faith. His life motto was: “…that I may understand with my heart.” In 1942, during World War II, he actively opposed the deportation of Jews from Slovakia. Through this, he demonstrated his moral stance and deep sense of humanity. After the communist regime took power in Czechoslovakia, he became a victim of its repressive system. In 1951, the totalitarian authorities sentenced him to 15 years in prison in a fabricated trial. Despite cruel treatment, he remained steadfast in his faith and beliefs. This portrait honors his character, bravery, and spiritual strength in times of oppression.
